ONLINE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING SAFETY - TOP TIPS |
||
|
As Christmas approaches, we’re sharing our top tips for shopping online safely.
The information below is a bargain because it could save you money, and it works best when shared with friends and family, so make sure to take note!
We know that cyber criminals take advantage of busy shopping periods, so our top advice is to Stop! Think Fraud.
Always take a moment before clicking on links in emails or messages. Instead of using links provided in emails, go directly to the official website of the business, using an address you know and trust.
Be cautious with search results - sponsored listings often appear at the top of search engines and may not be genuine. Double-check the website address before making any purchases.
Verify suspicious sites. Visit https://www.getsafeonline.org/checkawebsite/, where you can enter a web address to check if it’s potentially fraudulent.
Remember to keep your accounts secure by using unique passwords for each account. Use a trusted password management app on your phone or computer to remember them.
Always have two factor authentication turned on when possible. Only save your payment details on accounts that have two factor authentication set up. This could be the key step that prevents a cybercriminal from accessing your information.
Choose safe payment methods - avoid bank transfers, as they offer limited protection if something goes wrong. Instead, use trusted payment platforms like PayPal, or pay by credit or debit card for added security.
Watch out for delivery scam messages. If you’re expecting parcels, be wary of emails claiming to be from delivery companies asking for extra payment or personal details.
Always use the tracking number provided by the retailer and visit the delivery company via a trusted weblink – not by clicking a link in a text or email.
Shopping online doesn’t have to be risky - just remember: Stop! Think Fraud. For more advice on staying safe, visit our website for practical tips to protect yourself this Black Friday and beyond.
